Maximus is my interpretation of an UltraMarines Emperor's Champion. The miniature is based upon actor Russel Crowe's Maximus in the film Gladiator. I was heavily inspired by the massed formation of Legionnaires in the opening battle scene, and felt that the character of Maximus would make an ideal Space Marine officer. Stoic, loyal to the Emperor, and filled with determination, Maximus embodies the qualities that would make a perfect UltraMarines hero.
Since the second edition of Warhammer 40K, the UltraMarines have been depicted with Greco-Roman motifs on their armor decorations. Because of this it was relatively simple for me to integrate elements of Maximus from the film into the Warhammer 40K universe. If Mr. Crowe, or director Ridley Scott should happen to upon this web page, I hope they will approve of my homage to their excellent work.
The miniature of Maximus was constructed from the 3rd edition plastic Tactical Space Marines sprue. Approximately 60 hours of painting time helped me earn a 3rd place recognition for Warhammer 40k Single Miniature at the US Games Day/Golden Demons 2001.
